Job Description

Summary:

The Occupational Therapist is licensed by the RI Department of Health to practice occupational therapy under the supervision of a Residential Program Manager. The Occupational Therapist performs evaluations and implements treatment programs to patients based on the patient's functional cognitive and perceptual limitations. The goal of Occupational Therapy is to achieve or restore the patient to the highest level of function by performing therapeutic techniques and procedures based on the patient's assessment and the physician's order. The Occupational Therapist provides treatment to patients of all ages as defined by scope of practice of the site.

Responsibilities:

The Occupational therapist in a group home setting will evaluate each resident and help the group home staff with implementation of necessary practices to help residents perform their everyday activities and reach their individualized goals. Review and monitor residents progress and make recommendations to treatment team about changes that may need to be implemented.

Consistently applies Lifespans CARE values (Compassion Accountability Respect and excellence) in improving the health status of the residents within the group home setting. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Lifespan Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

Evaluates patients establishes treatment goals/outcomes and implements patient treatment plan. Observes precautions indications and contraindications for all treatment procedures. Monitors progress of patient re-establishes goals and revises treatment plans according to protocol.

Provides written and verbal communication with physicians nurses case managers and other personnel involved with the patient on the patient rehabilitation status and recommendations.

Provides supervision to Occupational Therapist Assistants students Rehab. Aides and volunteers. Communicates routinely with Occupational Therapist Assistants to monitor patient progress/status re-assessments needs and change in treatment plan.

Effectively uses conventional therapy techniques such as modalities ROM strengthening ADL training cognitive/perceptual training manual therapy and wound/bum care lymphedema management hand therapy splinting/orthotic to achieved established patient and therapy goals.

Demonstrates competency in therapeutic procedures as determined by the clinical specialist supervisor or manager.

Provides education and training to patients/patient caregiver and family to effectively maintain level of progress achieved in therapy program. Develops written exercise programs and instructions. Educates other health care professionals to the role of occupational therapy as well as providing training and in-services in areas of expertise. Will utilize proper body mechanics for personal and patient safety. Will demonstrate the ability to safely lift transfer and mobilize patients and equipment.

Participates in mandatory departmental and hospital-wide in-services including safety and rehab equipment review.

Documents findings in the patient's medical records according to department and hospital policy. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Participates in departmental QA/QI program.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Bachelors Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university. Licensed Occupational Therapist in the State of Rhode Island.

Knowledge of severe and persistent mental illness.

EXPERIENCE:

New graduates considered clinical experience in the acute care setting preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment. Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Incumbent functions independently within a broad scope of department policies and practices; generally refers specific problems to supervisor only where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

None.
