Overview

D493 - Pressure Hull and External Structures - Engineers are responsible for supporting the detail design and analysis of submarine pressure hull structures including tanks, trunks, and bulkheads as well as structures external to the pressure hull including the bow, sail, super structure, stern, and control surfaces. Responsibilities include structural engineering analysis of equipment foundations, bulkheads, tanks, trunks, hull inserts, and the pressure hull shell and frames, bow and stern main ballast tank structures, external fairing's and control surfaces. Analysis for submergence, fatigue, hydrodynamic flow loads and tank pressurization loads and shock loads (static and dynamic) are performed using state-of-the-art computer models as well as conventional hand calculation methods. Engineering review of the design follows the design development from concept formulation through detailed models to design disclosure in a DesignBuild-Sustain environment as well as construction support during the build phase. Additionally, D493 Engineers will interface with designers and engineers from other disciplines and participate in Navy design reviews. Knowledge of finite element analysis, steel design techniques and/or advanced mechanics of materials is required for these positions.

This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables. Qualifications

Required:

    A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in civil engineering (structural concentration) or mechanical engineering.
  • 0-10 years of related engineering experience.
  • Internal Candidates must be from organizations outside of operations (Casciano/Gabriel)
Skills

The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Candidate must be highly motivated, be able to perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in a team environment. Demonstrable skills and proficiency in the steel design, structural analysis, finite element analysis, systems engineering, or other structural design and analysis related skills.
