Job Description

Summary:

Reporting to the Chief of Hospital Operations and the President of Rhode Island Hospital and working collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer of Epicenter Operations the Vice President of Epicenter Operations and Patient Flow has primary responsibility for assessing developing and implementing strategies aimed at optimizing patient access and flow at Lifespan hospitals with a focus on the emergency departments inpatient units and procedural areas at the medical/surgical hospitals. This position has a critical role in collaborating and providing leadership to teams focused on performance improvement activities that affect patient access and patient flow as well as leveraging Lifespan resources to execute these activities. Key working relationships: hospital leadership Care Coordination Utilization Management Clinical Services Leaders Ancillary Leaders and medical staff.


Key areas of focus include the implementation optimization and oversight strategies to improve length of stay and patient flow that is meaningfully measured and articulated regularly. This should include short- and long-term planning utilizing data to identify opportunities to optimize bed availability remove barriers to care progression and implement systems that facilitate and support this work.


This role has operational oversight of the Epicenter Transfer and Access center and LifePACT.


Responsibilities:

Develops and leads system strategic framework for improving length of stay patient flow and ED throughput.


Develops improves and sustains systems structure and processes for monitoring and managing patient flow to maximize patient access and minimize delays.


Effectively communicates vision with hospital leadership clinical departments medical staff and ancillary departments to successfully drive change.


Identifies leads and sustains initiatives to improve EpiCenter processes.


Evaluates statistics indicating patient flow hospital discharges throughput performance and potential issues and reports to hospital leadership; designs and maintains operational policy and procedure manual; recommends and implements changes as appropriate.


Plans department services and operations including review of tracking and trending data to assess the need for performance improvement related to all stakeholders.


Oversees and orchestrates external patient transfers and intra-hospital patient movement; ensures census goals are met by working with interdisciplinary groups and entities to coordinate patient flow.


Provides leadership in surge planning for RIH/HCH hospital and supports surge planning executions for all hospitals.


Participates in development and assessment of new programs that support the health system*s strategic goals; assesses market position and provides analysis for decision-making process; participates in the development of related business plans when applicable.


Maintains interdisciplinary collaborative relationships with physicians nurses nursing leadership clinical units and hospital administration.


Provides leadership for the department; promotes staff development and education; provides opportunity for formal and informal education to promote ongoing staff competency.


Selects develops manages and evaluates direct reports; oversees the selection development management and evaluation of indirect reports.


Performs related duties as required.



Other information:

QUALIFICATIONS * EDUCATION:

Bachelor*s degree required. Knowledge of healthcare management and process improvement at a level normally acquired through the completion of a master*s degree in healthcare administration business administration or related field.


A clinical background is desirable but not required.



QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE:

5-7 years of progressive leadership experience preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex healthcare environment.


Comfort with deploying resources in process engineering and process mapping.


Extensive change management experience.


Possess a functional understanding of financial analytics and budget acumen.


Experience building business plans and proformas desired.


Demonstrated mentoring capability and interest.

Advanced knowledge of computer software including the full Microsoft Office suite.
