The Metra Internship Program provides an opportunity for college sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students to gain practical experience through on-the-job learning. Metra assigns students to projects related to their academic/educational field of study, which complements classroom instruction. The knowledge gained contributes to career development, while the experience provides insight on the wide variety of jobs in the transportation industry.

The Transportation - System Operations department is responsible for arranging the movement of all trains and crews to ensure safe and efficient dispatching of Metra's rail lines as well as technical support to advanced safety systems for approximately 900 employees.

Reporting under the Director - System Operations the intern will work on a various business improvement projects, including safety analytics and train and crew movement logistics, process and protocol operating rule review, office management, as well as logistics planning for upcoming track work and construction programs.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

The Intern must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in an undergraduate program or in a graduate program from an accredited institution. Preferred, but not required, areas of study are Engineering, City and Regional/ Urban Planning, Geography, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, English, Environment, Logistics, Mathematics, Data Analytics, Graphic Design/ Computer Aided Drawing/ Other related graphical, Gaming, or Like AI/ Alternative Reality graphical fields or a related field.

Must know how to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Must be willing and able to learn new software. Must be willing and able to work in a complex, fast paced, operating environment with people and able to manipulate data in various states of complexity and easy of use requiring complex filtering and report making. Must be willing to learn the complex and exciting aspects of railroad control center operations.

Must be 18 years or older; able to legally work in the United States; a student in good standing for each semester/quarter during their internship; and available to work between 12 and 20 hours per week for up to one year and option to work 12-40 hours per week during summer months.
