Job Description
SUMMARY:

We are seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to work on research focused on firearm injury prevention and community engagement. The RA will work with Principal Investigator Dr. Megan Ranney with opportunities for exposure to co-investigators in psychology public health injury prevention and digital health. This could be an ideal opportunity for recent college graduate who is looking for experiences to help strengthen an application for graduate studies in psychology medical school or public health. Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and Research Manager the RA will be responsible for assisting the study team in all phases of the studies. Strong customer service and organizational skills are paramount. Study tasks will include but are not limited to recruiting and screening potential participants obtaining informed consent interviewing participants post-intervention preparing and maintaining study records contacting participants to obtain baseline and follow-up surveys database management data cleaning performing statistical analyses creation and management of intervention content online (study website Instagram) ordering and mailing physicals materials to study sites and supporting the project manager with various administrative tasks such as IRB approvals and progress reports. The RA will adhere to ethical procedures for subject recruitment and crisis protocols. Lastly may be responsible for assisting with periodic literature reviews and assist with preparation of abstracts manuscripts and presentations

STUDY DESCRIPTION:

Guardians 4 health (G4H): Reframing Firearm Injury Prevention Through Bystander Interventions for Youth Shooting Sports Participants in a CDC-funded community-based randomized controlled intervention study. This study proposes to examine the effectiveness of a theory-based youth firearm injury prevention intervention in changing knowledge attitudes and behaviors regarding firearm safety and their role in reducing firearm injury risk in their communities. The research will be complete through collaboration between National 4-H Shooting Sports the American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM) and researchers at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides assistance to Principal Investigators to coordinate research activities related to department*s field of study and investigators specific study.
  • Assists research physician in identification and follow up of patients meeting criteria for inclusion in clinical research studies; ensures protocol eligibility requirements are met.
  • Establishes and/or maintains study record for each participant. Interviews patient and/or family to explain nature of study elicit cooperation and gather information to complete study questionnaire. Facilitates obtaining informed consent. May schedule patient appointments and call patients to complete documentation.
  • May review medical records to abstract information necessary to complete forms. May request and follow up on missing data such as laboratory test results and the like.
  • Monitors adherence to protocol; alerts physician when laboratory tests ordered have not been performed medication protocol not followed etc.
  • May perform research-based EKG*s vital signs blood spinning and shipping of blood and tissue products in accordance with protocol specifications.
  • Collects and organizes patient data into appropriate format to facilitate data entry. Operates computer to enter study information into database.
  • Using pre-packaged software and according to needs of research supervisor performs computer-assisted statistical analysis such as multiple antecedent variables linear regression frequencies cross tabulations and the like. May write non-complex programs using computer and software *compatible language to reformat information create new files etc.
  • Maintains computer equipment arranges for internal/external service as necessary to effect repairs and maintenance.
  • Prepares related graphs and charts or results of data gathered. Participates in quantitative and qualitative analyses of resultant information.
  • May assist in planning research protocols.
  • Coordinates activities of others assigned to research project to interview patients compete forms or perform other tasks.
  • Reviews literature pertaining to research being conducted in order to better understand project and gather relevant information.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:


  • Bachelor*s Degree in social science social work and/or public health.
  • Highly organized self-motivated outstanding attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills including comfort with cold calling
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends for up to two hours on a given day


PREFERRED EXPERIENCES:

  • Prior applied or research experience in firearm injury prevention or violence prevention
  • Prior experience with firearms or safe handling and storage of firearms
  • Familiarity with data collection software (e.g. REDCap) qualitative analysis software )e.g. NVivo) citation software (e.g. EndNote) and statistical software (e.g. Stata)
  • Prior experience with 4-H community
  • Prior experience with community-based research/engagement or implementation science
  • Prior experience with qualitative research (e.g. motivational interviewing)4
  • Prior experience with clinical research and institutional review boards (IRBs)
  • Prior customer service or marketing experience


SHIFT INFORMATION:

REMOTE

Weekdays with requirement to work some nights and weekends for up to two hours on a given day to support intervention implementation. Max weekly night or weekend hours per week is 5.


ORGANIZATION:

Please note that the Research Assistant will be employed through Rhode Island Hospital but the work can be done remotely within the U.S.
